Some animal rights activists do highly controversial things to attract attention. Examples include running onto the field during MLB games, or calling milk a symbol of white supremacy.
However, attention does not guarantee positive impact. In fact, the only thing attention does is change the magnitude of impact taking place (whether that be positive or negative).
For example, the article below attracted significant attention for the animal rights movement. But was this attention good for the animal rights movement, or bad?

Despite its ineffectiveness, many animal charities still seek controversy because it resonates with people who already support animal rights.
And since nearly all funding and praise comes from within the animal rights movement, it's an effective strategy for raising money and gaining followers.
This works great for the charities, but is alienating to outsiders, who often form a negative impression of the animal rights community.
