If farmers could improve conditions at no cost, they'd be more open to doing so. This makes providing physical resources to farmers a promising strategy:
When executing this strategy, it is important to avoid providing resources that would increase a farm's capacity.
For example, if a charity gave farmers free land in hopes of giving animals more space, the farmers would likely just use the extra land to farm more animals. This is because land is often the limiting factor on how many animals a farm can raise, and more animals means more profit.
Fortunately, this issue does not apply to many of the resources a charity could provide to a farm. For example, if a charity gave a factory farm free pain medication, this would not increase the farm's capacity at all, since by default factory farms simply don't use pain medication.
