Fish Welfare Initiative Improves Living Conditions for Fish

Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is a charity with two main areas of work:

• Providing direct services to improve the welfare of farmed fish.^[1]
• Conducting research aimed at figuring out better ways to help fish.^[2]

Overall, we believe FWI is implementing a solid strategy for helping farm animals, and we consider it to be an effective charity.

FWI's Direct Services

FWI partners with fish farmers to provide free water quality monitoring. In return, farmers agree to maintain stocking densities below a set limit, and to keep water quality above specified thresholds.

The process works as follows:

• FWI forms a partnership with a fish farmer.
• FWI analyzes the water quality on the fish farm (at least once per month, and more frequently when issues are suspected).
• If water quality problems are identified, FWI requests corrective action from the farmer.
• FWI follows up to check if the water quality problems have been fixed, and advises further corrective action if needed.^[1]

According to FWI, they are currently partnered with over 100 farms in India, and they have helped improve waters estimated to have housed millions of fish.^[3][4]

FWI's Research

Currently, much of FWI's work is focused on research related to helping fish.^[5] FWI's research has included topics such as:

• Fortifying fish feed with nutrients to improve welfare.
• Discovering acceptable dissolved oxygen and ammonia levels for India's top two carp species.
• Exploring opportunities for pre-slaughter stunning in India.
• Improving welfare conditions for baby fish on farms.^[2]

Although it is hard to assess the impact of research, these are all practical topics to explore.

Conclusion

FWI has created a solid system for helping farm animals:

• FWI provides a resource (water quality testing) that helps both farmers and animals.^[1]
• This makes farmers want to work with FWI to improve animal welfare.

Additionally, FWI provides relatively strong evidence to substantiate their claims, and does practical research on helping fish.^[2][6] For these reasons, we believe FWI is a strong option for donors who are interested in helping farm animals.
