Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) is a charity that does litigation and legislative work. We do not think their work is efficient at helping farm animals.
Since being founded in in 1995, NhRP has filed numerous lawsuits, but has never won a case. These failed lawsuits have cost NhRP millions of dollars.
Based on this, we do not believe funding additional litigation efforts from NhRP is an efficient allocation of funds.
So far, NhRP's only publicly verifiable legislative win has been securing a local law preventing elephants from being held captive in Ojai, California. However, given that Ojai has had 0 known elephants since the 1990s (and the law was passed in 2023), we believe it is very unlikely that this law will ever help any animals.
Note: for context, Ojai contains less than 0.02% of California's population, and NhRP recently stated: "there are 19 elephants in California being held captive against their will in small exhibits, unjustly forced to exist for the benefit of their human captors." Thus, the law applies to a small city in a state with very few captive elephants — none of them in Ojai.
We do not think NhRP's work is efficient at helping farm animals. Accordingly, we do not recommend donating to them at this time.
